In Madeira our Captain, Frederick Cook, informed the crew of his plan to make a "detour" to the South Pole on the way to the North Pole. When we set out from Norway, our crew left the homeland believing their true destination is the Arctic. Especially the polar regions are in most world maps strongly distorted. And moreover, today there’s still terra incognita in the world, which is largely blank upon the map – so are the polar regions. We do not even know exactly how the Antarctic Ice looks like on a map. The Azimuthal Equidistant projection is a great Projection to represent the polar regions. It depicts all distances from the pole correctly.
Have a look at the used projection. The Antarctic Ice isn't distorted at all.
