On 14 January 1911, me and my crew arrived in Antarctica at the "Bay of Whale". Snowstorms and a bleary view, white as far as the eye can see. Everything is hidden by ice and snow. The Antarctic ice is permanently covered by some 29 million km3 of ice. It is a vast, windy, dry, and intensely cold place – a white desert.
As we arrived, we started to build Framheim "the home of our ship Fram", our basecamp. We erected a hut and brought large supply of food to the base. From Framheim, I started to plan our journey to the pole.
